How you can use the NDIS to be in charge
Do you feel limited by the “programmes” offered by disability services?
Do you want supports that are tailored to YOUR life instead?
Do you want to decide how you are supported?
You can do this with the NDIS!
Come along to:
- Discover the life benefits of directing your own support.
- Find out how YOU can do this.
- Hear from people with disability and families successfully self-directing.
You will hear from 4 people who are directing their supports in different ways
- Working in genuine partnership with a disability service provider. You will learn how to find and form a relationship with a provider and share roles and responsibilities
- Using a provider who can help manage financial, legal and administrative responsibilities
- Receiving a direct payment from the NDIS. You will learn how people are sourcing their own supports and making payments to their chosen providers themselves.
Who?
Catherine Mahony
From childhood Catherine has been aware of the discomfort people often feel in relating to her as a person who is blind. She is committed to sharing her experiences in the hope that we will focus on what is common to all people rather than our differences.
Catherine brings extensive experience in written and spoken communications and a commitment to people with disability participating in the community as contributing, valued members. Having recently transitioned to the NDIS, Catherine is experiencing the benefits of directing her own supports for the first time.
Ron Prince
Ron has been described as a disability activist and is passionate about people with disabilities getting a fair go. Ron has two adult children who have intellectual disability.
He and his wife have been very active in assisting their son and daughter to direct their own support packages and facilitating their independent living arrangements. Ron and his wife have seen the difference that a person-centred approach and individualised funding has made to their son’s and daughter’s lives.
Ron is experienced in self-directing support through both the NSW Supported Living Fund and NDIS. He has also taken an active role in mentoring other families in applying for and directing their own support packages.
Linda Hughes
Linda is dedicated to working towards a socially just and inclusive society where people with disability are valued and treated with the utmost respect and dignity.
Linda has a twenty-two year old son who has disability. Linda has been managing her son’s support on his behalf for many years. Until recently Linda was engaged in a shared management type of arrangement with a service provider and has now moved to directly employing the support workers who assist her son. By self-directing her son’s support Linda is able to find creative solutions that ensure her son enjoys a good and typical life and is included in the full life of the community.
She is keen to share what she has learned about self directing supports so that others have access to the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy its benefits.
Libby Ellis
Libby believes relationships are crucial to the sustainability of self-directed supports and her strength is working from the grass roots, supporting people to develop a positive vision of the future and then making it happen. Libby’s older brother, Matthew, has an intellectual disability and autism and has directed his own supports with the help of family and a circle for support for 16 years.
