Taking action to develop a committed group of people is full of ups and downs
A network (or circle) of support is a group of people who are intentionally invited to come together in friendship and support of a person with disability in order to protect their interests into the future.
They are an idea that has been around for quite some time; an innovation of the late, great Judith Snow.
The things that stop us taking action
Attending workshops can give us lots of great ideas. But we can often leave still wondering how to ‘land’ the ideas in our lives.
We can get caught in a cycle of too much thinking and planning and little action, or we take steps but without a clear purpose in mind.
It’s emotional work too because we’re stepping out and we’re working with people. Our natural fears and vulnerabilities are present.
An online program of support
Libby Ellis has experienced this first hand with her own brother’s circle of support, which has gone through many ups and downs over the years, but has helped him achieve so much.
She’s also supported many others to start and maintain their own circle and so learned a thing or two along the way.
One of these lessons is the power in getting together with like-minded others to take action, to reflect, learn and keep moving forward. It means we are drawing from real life knowledge and understanding and also meeting people to exchange ideas, and advice and to feel validated.
Our online program offers 3 things
Accountability
Having a partner in action and something to work towards is very helpful when you’ve got your head down in the scrum!
This program is about helping you to take action and learn through your experience by providing a structure and time frame to take that action.
Dig into each others’ brains
Collaborative learning is cool.
You might not know something, but someone else will. You will have knowledge and experience that someone else doesn’t!
Basically we can learn much from one another. Having a chance to reflect and develop our own awareness also helps us to make greater use of our talents.
Many hands make light work
We feel on our own enough in this world. So this is about your own support network with others who are of like mind. You can give to others if you feel in a great place, and receive from others.
So what does it look like?
This is a bi-monthly online support program designed to help you get further with your circle, problem-solve and stay on track.
This means you get to connect with like-minded people you wouldn’t normally be able to do.
We will use a simple meeting system called GoToMeeting. We’ll help you learn how to get comfortable with it – all you need is a computer, camera and internet connection.
